BOULDER & ROCK RETAINING WALLS
Natural boulder and rock retaining walls for rural homes, large properties, ranches, and estates across Durango and Southwest Colorado. We build single and terraced boulder walls, moss rock walls, rock borders, and stone steps that hold their ground through freeze-thaw winters and look like they belong in the landscape. 20+ years working in mountain terrain. Built right, built to last.
OUR SERVICES
Boulder & Rock Wall Construction, Durango, CO
BOULDER RETAINING WALLS
Large natural boulders placed and interlocked by machine to retain slopes, support driveways and pads, and define grade changes. Built with proper base preparation and drainage for structural performance that lasts.
TERRACED BOULDER WALLS
Steep slopes broken into a series of shorter walls with usable terraces between them. Terracing manages tall grade changes, controls erosion, and creates plantable, attractive space on hillside properties.
MOSS ROCK WALLS
Weathered moss rock walls with the aged, natural character that fits established mountain landscapes. A favorite for entries, gardens, and anywhere the wall should look like it has always been there.
ROCK BORDERS & LANDSCAPE BOULDERS
Rock borders along driveways and beds, boulder accents, and landscape boulder placement. Clean definition for the landscape with stone that matches the property.
NATURAL STONE STEPS
Stone steps and stairways integrated into walls and slopes. Safe, solid access between terraces, patios, and grade changes, set to stay put.
ENGINEERED RETAINING WALLS
Designed retaining systems for taller walls and critical applications supporting structures or driveways. We coordinate engineering when the project calls for it and build to the specification.
BUILT FOR MOUNTAIN CONDITIONS
What Makes a Wall Last, Durango, CO
PROPER BASE PREPARATION
Every wall starts below the ground. We excavate to stable material and build a compacted base sized for the wall above it. A wall is only as good as what it sits on.
DRAINAGE BEHIND EVERY WALL
Water pressure is the leading cause of wall failure, and Durango's freeze-thaw cycles multiply the force. Free-draining backfill, drain pipe where conditions call for it, and surface grading that moves water away keep the wall standing.
MACHINE-PLACED, INTERLOCKED STONE
Each boulder is selected and set by an experienced operator so it locks against its neighbors with proper batter into the slope. Mass, friction, and placement do the structural work.
STONE THAT FITS THE LANDSCAPE
We source local granite, moss rock, and sandstone that matches Southwest Colorado terrain. Structural performance first; a finished appearance that looks like it belongs follows from work done right.

HOW WE WORK
Boulder Wall Process, Durango, CO
From site assessment to finish grading, we follow a systematic process that delivers walls with structural integrity and a natural finished appearance.
SITE ASSESSMENT & DESIGN
We walk your property, evaluate the slope, soils, drainage patterns, and access, and talk through what the wall needs to do. You get a clear plan for wall placement, height, and style, with engineering coordinated when required.
STONE SELECTION & SOURCING
We source quality boulders and stone matched to your property and the wall's structural role: local granite, moss rock, or sandstone in the right sizes for the build.
BASE PREPARATION & DRAINAGE
We excavate to stable material, build a compacted base, and install the drainage the wall needs: free-draining backfill, drain pipe where conditions call for it, and grading that manages surface water.
PRECISION BOULDER PLACEMENT
Experienced operators select and set each boulder to interlock with its neighbors, battered into the slope for structural performance. This is where 20+ years of seat time shows in the finished wall.
BACKFILL, GRADING & FINISH
We backfill and compact behind the wall, finish grade the surrounding area, and leave the site clean. Walls can be finished with rock borders, steps, planting areas, or fresh mulch as part of a complete property enhancement.

PRICING FACTORS
Boulder Wall Cost Factors, Durango, CO
Every wall is unique to its site. We evaluate all factors during your site visit and provide a detailed, transparent estimate. No surprises. No hidden costs.
- +
WALL HEIGHT & LENGTH
Taller and longer walls take more stone, more base work, and more machine time. Terraced designs are priced per wall and terrace.
- +
STONE TYPE & SOURCING
Local granite, moss rock, and sandstone vary in material and haul cost. Stone already on your property can sometimes be incorporated into the build.
- +
TERRAIN & ACCESS
Steep slopes and tight access call for specialized equipment and careful technique. Open, accessible sites take less time.
- +
DRAINAGE REQUIREMENTS
Backfill, drain pipe, and surface drainage are sized to the site's water conditions. Proper drainage is what makes the wall last.
- +
ENGINEERING REQUIREMENTS
Walls over four feet, walls supporting structures or driveways, and certain zones may require engineered design. We coordinate the engineering and build to the specification.
- +
SITE FINISH SCOPE
Stone steps, rock borders, planting areas, mulch, and finish grading around the wall can be included as part of a complete property enhancement.
