What is the difference between a boulder wall and an engineered retaining wall?+

Boulder walls use large natural stones placed and interlocked by machine, relying on their mass and battered (leaned-back) placement to retain earth. Engineered retaining walls use designed systems such as segmental blocks or reinforced structures for taller walls or critical applications. We build both and will recommend the right approach for your wall height, soil conditions, and what the wall needs to hold back.

Do retaining walls need drainage?+

Yes. Water pressure behind a wall is the leading cause of retaining wall failure. Every wall we build includes proper drainage: free-draining backfill, drain pipe where conditions call for it, and grading that moves surface water away from the wall. In Durango's freeze-thaw climate, trapped water expands as ice and can move even large boulders over time, so drainage is not optional.

Can you build boulder walls on steep slopes?+

Yes. Steep mountain terrain is our specialty. Terraced boulder walls are often the best solution for steep slopes, breaking one tall grade change into a series of shorter walls with usable, plantable terraces between them.
